Wisdom teeth removal and impacted canine tooth operation! How much does it hurt?

I am a 16-year-old girl and I am getting all 4 wisdom teeth removed and an impacted upper canine tooth exposure in the same operation tomorrow under general anesthetic. I'm also getting 5 baby teeth pulled that never came out by themselves. I'm just wondering how much this will hurt, how swollen my face will get, how many days of school I'll probably have to miss, and basically what the operation will be like. My oral surgeon never went into detail with me at the consultation.

I'm not even going to tell you. Get your prescriptions filled immediately.

Don't worry about it. You'll have good medications. My problem was I didn't get my prescriptions filled very fast and it was too long between the surgery and that first dose.

I do remember being SO hungry about day three and my mom making me a cream cheese omelet that I still remember as being one of the best things I ever tasted in my life(I had to have been hungry cause my mom couldn't really cook).

Can't really help you on the swelling or how many days of school you'll miss. Can tell you that as I was going under I was looking at some wall paper and it started making funny patterns. I started giggling. The next thing I remembered was waking up and hearing a nurse comment to someone else that I had laughed through the whole operation. I became alert almost immediately and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. But I only had the four wisdom teeth out so I can't tell you what the other will be like.

My best advice is not to worry and get a good nights sleep. Get some good books ready to read and have some good movies in mind to watch.

You'll be fine! They'll take care of you!
Reply:Girl, I am so sorry. I had all four wisdom removed at once too. And unfortunately, there are no words to explain what you are in for.
Reply:Ok, not you are going to hear mixed reviews on this. I am only 14 years old and i have already had my wisdom teeth taken out, all 4 {I know a little shocking} But i had to get my wisdom teeth taken out because i have braces on right now, and if i didn't get the wisdom teeth removed they would make my teeth crocked again. But on top of that i had a tooth on the very bottom of my jaw that was slanted and it would never grow in correctly, so they had to cut into my jaw and remove the tooth. I know everybody says that it hurts when you have your wisdom teeth taken out, you know it may but mine didn't hurt because i did not have that many roots where the wisdom teeth were so that's why i wasn't in a-lot of pain, but when you have a-lot of roots that's where the pain starts to hurt. You Will be OK if you take your Medina right when you get home. I wish you the best! : )
Reply:I would definitely ask your oral surgeon about any questions you may have. It is your job to find out what will be happening to your body.

From personal and friend experience:

I had only three wisdom teeth removed and I was given nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and I was awake listening to my iPod. I could feel a bit of pressure and slight irritation.

My friend when under (general anesthetic) and she was so glad she did because you do not feel anything or remember anything. Its 5, 4, 3, gone.

Because so much is going to happen in your mouth, you will most likely be out of school for at least a week. I did mine over a 4 day weekend (Fri-Mon) and went to school on Tuesday with a bit of puffiness.

You will be extremely puffy on the sides of your face near your mouth, and I mean extremely puffy for the first few days. I had to hold my face walking around my house because it was too heavy at first. (I do not want to scare you but it is true with me and it was with my friend; she wrapped her face up like she had the mumps). And, because of all the bleeding, your cheeks will turn yellowish but it will fade along with the puffiness.

I have never had a "impacted upper canine tooth exposure" so I can't tell you what it's like. I don’t even know exactly what it is. But, I’m sure it wall add some puffiness in the area and add to the pain factor.

As for the after pain: just take your medication when it tells you to. (I had Oxycodone, the generic of Percocet).

The first night is the worst; I’m not going to lie. I was almost crying once the local anesthetic wore off. You then will want all the medication you can get. But, omg, once the pills take affect its like heaven (there is still a slight pain, like a small headache pain but you get use to it). Because you’re so sore to eat anything solid you need to eat a lot of soft and mussy stuff to take the pills. What ever you get (because of everything you’re getting I won’t be surprised if you get Vicodin) it will be strong on an empty stomach, so eat lots of food to take the pills. I hope you love yogurt, apple sauce, and pudding.

Things to do to help with the pain: Use frozen ice packs on your face for 20 minutes on then take them off for 10 minutes. Repeat until your can’t take the cold anymore. But keep it up for the first 48 hours after surgery. It does helps with the pain and helps with the puffiness.

P.S. You will get use to the salt-water rinse. If you can’t take it all at first, start out with a small amount of salt, like a pinch, and build up every rinse until you reach a ½ teaspoon in 8oz of warm water.

Hope this helps. PM me if you have any more questions.

Reply:Oh, honey, I would rather go through childbirth again. I had all 4 of mine taken out with some complications. Get your painkillers ASAP. You won't be able to eat and maybe you can drink. My face swelled and bruised pretty badly and I was off work for 2 or 3 days I think. Good luck.
