I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed on Tuesday. It is now Saturday and I still cannot close my mouth because my cheeks are so swollen. The swelling seems to have spread to my throat a little bit, because when I touch that area it hurts a little bit. My Oral Surgeon didn't give me a syringe to clean out the wounds, which I feel like he should have. I also have some bruising on my cheeks and eye, although I know this is normal (same thing happened to my girlfriend). What I'm really wondering is how long it'll take before the swelling will go down and I'll be able to eat normal food again. Christmas is two days away and I'd like to be able to enjoy it.
How long is the recovery for impacted wisdom tooth removal?
Some people swell up like a blow fish when they have their wisdom teeth removed. Some do not. Put ice packs on the swelling, take some motrin and relax. You can now rinse out your mouth with salt water. You could have started that after 24 hours. Drink lots of liquids. Watch for fever or increased pain. Call the dentist if that happens. He did not give you a syringe because it is necessary for a blood clot to form in order for healing to take place, otherwise you develop something called a dry socket and that is VERY painful. Rinsing out the socket is not something you want to do. The swelling should be going down my christmas day although not gone. You will be able to enjoy Christmas dinner maybe in slower and smaller bites.
Reply:when i had my impacted wisdom teeth removed, my cheeks swelled up like a chipmunk for a week! but after 7 days i was good and back to normal and my sisters had stopped making fun of my puffy cheeks :) good luck and i hope you get to enjoy Christmas dinner, even if it is a little more mashed up than usual! :)
Reply:When I had my wisdom teeth removed I was in a worse situation than you. I was knocked out and when I woke up I had major swelling and bruises. Also, I kept throwing up for like 3 days so I could not eat much. Even after that I could not take my pain medicine because it would make me get sick. So use ice packs, take pain medicine if you can keep it down, also you can gargle with salt water, eat soft things, and drink plenty of liquids.
