My impacted wisdom tooth has an abscess, at first it would cause swelling. It hasnt bothered me for months now. Being not to eager to have it ripped out of my gum I am wondering if it is going to be ok, I have a up coming dentist visit soon, I'm sure he will be for having it removed..

Besides getting infected, which can cause lots of nasty secondary effects, an impacted wisdom tooth can push the rest of your teeth out of alignment.

Your dentist will x-ray it and tell you what he thinks. He's seen this kind of thing before, I'm sure. Impacted wisdom teeth are very common! If you trust him, listen to what he says and what he recommends. If not, then find another dentist.
Reply:Oh my goodness. When is that appointment? - the sooner, the better. You have been very lucky to not have been bothered by it for months. What you need to think about is the infection spreading. This could be very bad.

It sounds like you will have the wisdom tooth removed - most people do have wisdom teeth removed. It is not too bad, especially when you receive the local anesthetic. I wouldn't doubt that you will be given a prescription for an antibiotic as well.

If your appointment is more than a week out, you might want to call and see if the Dr. can squeeze you in sooner to get that taken care of.

Good luck.
Reply:Yes, get it out.. I had the same issue for over a year, thinking that hey, if it doesn't hurt, leave it alone... WRONG... the infection in the abscess was the culprit to my sinus infections and other aches and pains from the neck up.. once it was out, everything went away, duh... Can't believe it took me so long! Don't wait! good luck.
