4 impacted wisdom teeth pulled next week! ARGH!?

I am nervous of the dentist as it is, but I have heard so many bad things about going under and the pain...please tell me your experiences...good or bad, so I can get an idea of what to expect. Also, what pain medication is best for afterwards?

It's not quite as bad as you think. We had an oral surgeon do our daughter's wisdom teeth. Follow his instructions after the surgery. The thing that helped our daughter the most was the ice packs. She kept them on regularly and it kept the swelling and bruising down quite a lot.

Rinsing w/warm salt water or a prescription rinse will keep your mouth free of bacteria to prevent infection. But as I said before, follow the surgeon's or dentist's instructions. You may not to able to do this right away.

I think at first she took Tylenol w/codeine. After that, it was just regular Tylenol. But honestly, she wasn't in that much pain.

Try not to worry, it will be all right. Best of luck to you.
Reply:Glad to be of help. Again, good luck to you! Report It

Reply:go to an oral surgeon instead of a dentist. They'll prescribe the right meds... you'll be eating Taco Bell again in a few days.
Reply:Here's hoping you have morphine or something in your future. My experience was relatively pain free, but a lot of vomiting.
Reply:I had an excellent experience getting all 4 wisdom teeth out. Not horrible pain- don't do well with prescription pain meds.People love to tell horror stories!
Reply:I just had a wisdom tooth pulled yesterday. My dentist gave me a prescription for percocet. Depending upon how bad your wisdom teeth are impacted will depend upon how much pain you will have. If the dentist has an easy time taking them out, your pain will be minimal. However, if he really has to work at it and it takes a long time to get them out, the pain factor will be increased. If you are young, it is usually easier to get the teeth out than if you are older. I know all this because that is what my dentist said to me as he pulled my tooth.
Reply:It really varies from person to person partly because some teeth are harder to remove than others. Mine were not impacted and my dentist did it with no problems. It was a bit annoying because I was awake. Some mild pain killers and a week or two of salt water gargles. It is weird afterwards cause you have these craters where the teeth were and food likes to get stuck in there - but rinsing gets the crumbs out. It could be handy if you were a hamster - you could carry around a snack for later,,,,,,,,, :)
Reply:mine wasn't impacted.but it really wasn't that bad,i was eating that same day.ask for percocet,or oxycondin for the pain.but be carefull there addicting.good luck!
Reply:Dont be nervous. They do well in getting the teeth out and it is better for you to have your lights out when they work. Tylenol 3 is good for pain while you have it. It is only for a couple of days.
